Hi there! My name is Sebastian Vega, I'm from San Antonio, Texas and I'm a social media intern at The New York Times. I'm also a recent graduate of the University of Southern California, where I earned a degree in broadcast and digital journalism.
I’m a digital journalist whose passionate about improving the way you receive news on social and mobile platforms. I care deeply about the evolution of news online and I’m obsessed with making informative, easily understandable news content that puts you, the user, first.
As more people join social channels and rely on them for news, I believe it’s crucial that organizations focus on building useful products and strategies for these platforms. This provide users with more accessible ways to stay informed, and it gives organizations more opportunities to build communities online.
As an effective newsroom leader, I’ve stood by these principals.
At the University of Southern California, I oversaw the production of more than 150 social videos, managed the most-followed college news Facebook page in the country, and introduced new forms of storytelling, such as Twitter threads and 360 video, to its student-run news outlet, USC Annenberg Media.
As executive editor at Annenberg Media, I led digital strategy for its products, played a pivotal role in the creation of a Snapchat news show, and revamped the way its student journalists approached stories so that the outlet would have a more wide-reaching platform agnostic mindset.
While interning for NBC Nightly News in New York, I wrote the evening newsletter alongside digital staff and produced social videos viewed by millions. The next summer, I interned at CNBC where I pitched and produced social videos daily for a new team that was working to grow the outlet’s following on Facebook.
I work heavily with other modern story formats as well, such as interactive live video, Stories, vertical video and more.
Outside of work, I have served a seventeen-month term on the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' national board as the group's student representative.
